Working with the Dunlop Drive Seniors

Friday, November 20th, 2009

I have had the opportunity over the last few weeks to work very closely with the Seniors from the Dunlop Drive Seniors Centre to help rectify deficiencies in their building and bring it up to the standard they deserve.

A few weeks back I represented the Mayor and Council at the Seniors 90th Anniversary Tea. Prior to the event starting the President of the Seniors approached me about a long list of deficiencies that have existed at the Centre for some time. Mr. Viola and I toured the Centre and we made a list of the work that needed to be done. The list of about 15 items included everything from a leaky roof, to broken washroom facilities, to safe lighting on the outside of the building and so on.

It was a pleasure today to be able to call Mr. Viola and inform him that we were able to cross the last item off the list as the City awarded the tender for a new roof which will be installed early next month.

It was a pleasure to have worked with the Dunlop Seniors to bring this heavily used building, which is so important to many of our residents, up to a standard they deserve!

Good News for West St. Catharines!

_Device Memory_home_user_pictures_IMG00034My good friend Councillor Kushner and I have been fighting for years to have sidewalks installed down Louth St. from TRW across the train tracks to Ridley Road. This has been very difficult because multiple agencies have had to approve our request due to the tracks. Many of our West End residents, especially those with mobility challenges, have been asking for these sidewalks for years and Councillor Kushner and I finally got this passed through Council a month or so ago. I was very pleased to see that work has started on these sidewalks and they should be finished soon which is great news for West St. Catharines as a we now have a continuous linkage to the retail node at Fourth Avenue.

A great example of two Ward Councillors working together!

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day 2009Today I had the privilege to march in the Remembrance Day Parade from Legion Branch 24 to City Hall (where wreaths were laid) and then to the Cenotaph where we attended the Remembrance Day Ceremony. It was great to march along the newly named Veteran’s Way. This is a stretch of roadway that the City and Region worked closely together on to rename in honor of our Veterans. It was a beautiful day and it was very nice to see so many residents of all ages take part. After the ceremony we walked back to Branch 24 where we were able to spend the afternoon talking to and thanking many of the Veterans who sacrificed so much for the freedom we enjoy today. Then went down to Merritton Legion with our Fire Chief where we spent some time with Councillor Stevens and Foss, former Merritton Town Councillor, City of St. Catharines Councillor, and Regional Councillor Bill Marshall, and many of our Veterans from Merritton.

All in all it was a great day in which I felt honored and privileged to be a representative of the City of St. Catharines!
