I had the opportunity to participate in a great fundraiser in Port Dalhousie today to benefit Community Care of St. Catharines. As we all know our community has been hit very hard with the recent economic downturn which in turn has stretched the resources of our local Food Bank,Community Care, very thin. Community Care has indicated they have seen the demand grow to the point they are now going through a tonne and a half of food per day and resources are growing scarce!
The idea for this ”Eat a Breakfast…Feed a Family” fundraiser started with a few conversations between Dave and Lorna from the Breakfast Corner, my Council colleague Len Stack and myself. Dave and Lorna were generous enough to donate their restaurant and City Councillors Stack and myself as well as Regional Councillors Timms and Garcia donated all of the food so every cent (including tips and donations) went directly to Community Care. We started serving breakfasts at 6:30 am and worked through until 1pm. Mayor McMullan and Councillor Washuta as well as Regional Councillor Rigby helped serve food and clear tables!
Through the generosity of our customers today we were able to raise over $2500.00 (which Community Care can use to purchase between $2.50 and $8.00 worth of food) as well as lots of food and winter clothing! It was a great day for a great cause-thanks to everyone who took part!
